Nigel Passey

newton faulkner, neil finn, nigel passeyNigel is a singer songwriter… Nigel is from Leeds… Nigel attends Leeds College of Music… and Nigel is BRILLIANT, and I mean that.

I may, or may not, get any thanks for this but he sounds to me like a modern day Neil Finn from Crowded House gone solo. I don’t just mean in his vocal sound, I’m including the song structures and the writing in that comparrison.

There’s an interesting sound to the production of his songs too in that he includes some alternative instruments to the mix. Cello is provided by Jess Stones and Violin by Lorna Young. I’ve always liked the inclusion of instruments that you usually wouldn’t expect to hear in certain styles of music.

A comment on his Facebook Fan Page made me chuckle telling Nigel to use keyboards and samples for the violin and cello. Whilst I’m a big exponent of sampling and synths, music like Nigel’s just has to be done with the real instruments to help add to the warmth.

Currently Nigel’s MySpace player only has two songs on it and one is only a sampler – however his Facebook Fan Page has four songs including a superb cover of “Iris” originally by the Goo Goo Dolls. Nigel’s version is simply an acoustic guitar and an accomplished vocal performance.

I’m now listening to “You Should See Me Now” and consistent as ever we have some perfect acoustic guitar playing and some lovely warm vocals from Nigel with beautiful harmonies to boot. It’s got a nice hook to it too which is always a bonus.

On to “Made of Tissues” which, like “You Should See Me Now”, has some beautiful vocals and harmonies that I would like to hear the producer bring out more because they’re burried right in the middle.

I can’t wait to hear Nigel’s album and I expect to hear him feature on Radio 2 at some point in the future as his career really takes off. To coin a phrase “watch this space”.
