Turn of the Sun

Turn off the Sun are solid, tight and masters of their music. If you need great driving music from a band that is grounded and has solidarity to their tunes then look no further.

There’s something about “Weekend in Prague” that get’s my head nodding whilst I’m listening to it. Some would say it’s because I’m getting old… well I’m 35, but never the less I still know great music when I hear it, and this is great music. I always like to try and find familiar ground with songs and to me Turn off the Sun sound like Greenday meets Snow Patrol.

When listening to “Sirens” I can hear a Kings of Leon influence to the music. Andy Crawfords vocals are rounded and bold yet delicate where they need to be. He really knows how to deliver his message with vigour and passion.

“Bonfires” differs slightly from the two previous songs in that it starts more mellow, however we get to verse two and BANG, we’re rocking again. Great consistency in their music and according to Andy they should be recording some new material soon which I can’t wait to hear.

These songs really capture the live feel to their music and additionally there is a great music video for “Weekend in Prague” on their MySpace page. Great music and I would wager live they’re something else :)

Million Empire

million empireWhat I know about Million Empire could be written on the tip of a needle and their MySpace doesn’t reveal any more except that they hail from Birmingham.

You know what though, I don’t care that there is nothing revealed about them. I’m listening to the music. I’m not bothered about the geographic location of the group.

I’ve just listened to the first song on their MySpace player called “Goodnight” and it was a well produced and well written song. I like the structure the arrangment and the strong vocal performance from Westley.

The same applies to “Hunt with Desire” which I’m now listening to. Tight drumming, some great patterns and fills and a bass that partners with it extremely well. Some great sounding bass playing too which is always important to get you into the groove.

Talking about a groove insinuates that this is Urban, Hip Hop or R&B, but it’s not – this is alternative rock, and it kicks ass. I would imagine Million Empire are fantastic live and the last song on their player “Don’t Get Me Started” again is a real fast paced pleaser.

You can hear the passion in these songs and I would wager if Westley, Matt and Paulie went into a studio for a week with a producer they would have a fantastic single ready for radio. I might be over stepping the mark but I reckon we could be seeing a British Kings of Leon here.
